Nine Vignettes from Thrice Welcome,

Eric Ravilious was born in London in 1903. He studied and later taught at the Royal College of Art. He was a distinguished watercolour painter, lithographer, muralist, book illustrator, designer of textiles and pottery, but is well known as a wood engraver. His watercolour landscapes were inspired by the landscapes of the South Downs and Wiltshire.

He was a contemporary and friend of Edward Bawden, and was married to Tirzah Garwood, whom he met when he was her tutor at Eastourne College of Art.

He did extensive work as a war artist, and died in 1942 when his plane was lost over Iceland.

THREE VIGNETTES were engraved on 3 boxwood blocks to illustrate THRICE WELCOME, a booklet published by the Southern Railway in 1935. In the booklet the wood engravings were reproduced from metal stereotypes. They are here printed directly from the blocks in an edition of 500 copies on dampened velin d’Arches paper. The printing has been undertaken on a hand press by Ian Mortimer at IM Imprimit.
